Spend seven days exploring some of the best wilderness areas in Zimbabwe, while enjoying the rest and relaxation that comes with a morning yoga practice and afternoon meditation in untouched African bush. You will spend the first three days on the Zambezi River, with views of the spray from the mighty Victoria Falls.  The remaining days are spent in the Big Five country of the Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s flagship game reserve.

A yoga safari offers the chance to practise yoga in some of the most beautiful places in southern Africa, while enjoying the magic and sense of connection that comes with a daily yoga and meditation practice. Reconnect, transform and inspire yourself through movement and breath.

Would you like to host your own African yoga retreat?  We handle all the on-the-ground logistics, as well as source the best locations to match your requirements and budget. Contact us to discuss.

ITINERARY

Days 1 – 3: VICTORIA FALLS (Ilala Lodge
Upon arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred by road to Victoria Falls town, and your accommodation for the duration of you stay – Ilala Lodge. Located on the Zimbabwean side of the mighty Zambezi River, Ilala Lodge is the closet hotel to the magnificent Victoria Falls, while also allowing easily access to the town centre for exploration and eating out at the many excellent restaurants.

In the afternoon, you will be met by a local guide who will take you on a guided tour of Victoria Falls – one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty,  the greatest curtain of falling water in the world, and forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Day two will begin with an early yoga practice, followed by a sumptuous breakfast served at the lodge. The rest of the day is free for you to take part in some of the many activities available in Victoria Falls (own expense) . These include game drives, helicopter flips, elephant interaction experiences, and for the more adventurous, white river rafting and bungee jumping.

Returning to Ilala Lodge in the late afternoon, you then head out of a beautiful sunset and dinner cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. Watching the sunset, with elephants grazing along the banks of the river is an experience not to be missed. Dinner will be served on the boat, before returning to the lodge later in the evening.

Days 4 – 6: HWANGE NATIONAL PARK (Elephant’s Eye Lodge
After and early morning yoga practice, you will head off by road towards Hwange National Park and Elephant’s Eye Lodge.

The camp comprises of eight tented chalets. Every chalet has a double or twin beds surrounded by mosquito netting and with an en-suite bathroom with a bath and basin, gorgeous outside shower, and wrap-around veranda. The Lodge can host a maximum of 16 people at any given time, and all meals and most drinks are included.

Activities at Elephant’s Eye include game viewing, guided educational walks, bird watching and night game drives with trained field guides. There is also a fully operational spa and swimming pool. Elephant’s Eye overlooks a waterhole, which offers the opportunity to view game at close range from the deck.

In the afternoon of day four, you head out on your first game drive in custom built open 4WD game viewing vehicles. Hwange National Park is the premier wildlife reserve in Zimbabwe with a large wildlife population. On game drives we hope to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) along with the many other animals that this beautiful park has to offer.

The game drive carries on into the night –  we hope to see some nocturnal species – before returning to camp for a delicious dinner.

For the next two days (days five and six), you will settle into the relaxed rhythm of the African bush. Your days will be spent on game drives and game walks, with either a sunrise yoga practice, or a late morning yoga practice after an early morning game drive.

Elephant’s Eye is situated on a permanent waterhole, the only source of water for a good-sized area, which means you may not have to stray much further than your patio (or yoga mat) for amazing game viewing!

Day 7: VICTORIA FALLS – safari ends
Depending on your departure flight, there may be time for one last game viewing activity or yoga session, before packing your bags and transferring by road to Victoria Falls Airport for your fight home.

Host your own African yoga retreat.

What can you expect from a yoga safari?
A yoga safari combines both the natural beauty of the African bush with the physical and mental benefits of yoga. Yoga practice while on safari will be light and focussed on connecting with the breath and sensation in the body. The focus will be on instilling a deep sense calm and relaxation. You will be gently guided through a sequence of asana (postures), while afternoon meditations will offer an introduction to mindfulness practices.

No prior yoga or meditation experience is necessary.
