BOTSWANA ADVENTURE SAFARIS

BOTSWANA SELF-DRIVE CAMPING SAFARI

<
>

This 10 day self-drive safari has been specifically designed for the adventurous at heart!  You will self-drive through the best wilderness areas in Botswana, where only a 4×4 vehicle can go. Your fully equipped vehicle allows you to explore the wild areas of Botswana at your own pace. A highlight of this experience is wild camping through the Botswana national parks.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1: KASANE (camping)
On arrival in Kasane you will be met by a representative who will give you a comprehensive 2 – 3 hour briefing of the vehicle, included equipment and the route you will be driving and what conditions you can expect on our safari through the national parks of Botswana. Following the briefing you need to buy your provisions in Kasane for the next 9 days of your epic self-drive adventure. Your first night will be spent camping in Kasane as you familiarise yourself with your vehicle and equipment.

Day 2 & 3: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK (camping)
After breakfast and packing camp, you will drive to your campsite inside Chobe National Park. The Chobe area is renowned for its spectacular herds on elephants along the Chobe River and you will spend you next 2 nights camping on the banks of the Chobe River. You can explore this area at your own pace on daily game drives. Apart from elephant keep a look out for large herds of buffalo, leopard and wild dog.

Day 4 & 5: SAVUTI (camping)
After breaking camp and an early morning breakfast, you will leave the Chobe River system behind and travel south into the interior of Chobe National Park, and make your way to the Savuti area. The drive will take you 5-6 hours depending on game spotting along the way.

You will spend 2 nights camping in Savuti (and there is no better time to visit Savuti as the Savuti Channel flowed in 2010 for the first time in 30 years!). There are also bushmen paintings that you can visit in the area, as you head into Savuti, and this is the only area where you can exit your vehicle (other than the campsite). Remember not to touch the paintings.

The concentration of wildlife and birdlife, not to mention the open plains surrounded by the dry camel thorn trees on the Savuti marsh, are a wildlife photographer’s dream. Savuti is famous for its big game and particularly its predators. Lion and the spotted hyena live in constant battle for survival here, and if you are lucky, you may see cheetah or wild dog.

Day 6 & 7: KHWAI RIVER (camping)
Travelling further south, you cross the Mbabe Sandridge which provides some fun driving through thick sand as your make your way to the southern exit of Chobe National Park. As you leave Chobe, you enter the beautiful environment of the Khwai Community Trust that is on the northern border of the Khwai River.

This beautiful area offers excellent wildlife viewing. The wildlife is drawn to the cooling waters of the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta in an otherwise dry part of Botswana. Expect to see large concentrations of elephant, zebra and hippo. Predators are often seen, and there’s a very good chance of seeing the elusive leopard who love the wooded areas along the river bank. This is definitely some of the best game viewing in Botswana.

Day 8 & 9: MOREMI GAME RESERVE (camping)
Entering Moremi Game Reserve you quickly realise why this is such a famous reserve. Moremi lies in the centre of the Okavango Delta. It consists of permanently swamped areas, seasonally swamped areas and dry land, and covers an area of 3000 square kilometres. The Reserve encompasses a wide range of habitats – from wetland, floodplain and reed beds to forest and savannah woodland. The animal life inhabiting the Reserve is abundant and equally diverse, ranging from exotic birds, to zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, hippos lions and rhino.

Day 10: MAUN – SAFARI ENDS
Enjoy your last morning of this amazing experience, before packing the vehicle and head to Maun, where you’ll drop of the vehicle. The drive will take between 2 and 3 hours unless of course you see some amazing sightings along the way.
